Why you should hire the pros, and why Southwest Greens of New Mexico is leader in the industry for installation practices.

Perhaps you are asking yourself, “Can I install artificial grass myself?” Sure, you can try to install artificial grass yourself, but it is not an easy feat. The equipment and tools you need are pricey, it takes a long time to DIY, and you could run the risk of voiding the warranty. So, let’s see why you really should have your synthetic golf turf installed by a pro following artificial turf installation best practices.

WHY PROFESSIONAL ARTIFICIAL GRASS INSTALLATION

Whether you’re looking to add an artificial golf green to your yard, or you are managing a commercial golf course, having artificial turf installed professionally will save you time, headaches, and money — and, long-term, yield a more attractive green.

Saved Time

Even seemingly small DIY projects can easily turn into a big deal. We’ve all been there. Excessive trips to the hardware store for tools or supplies we didn’t know we needed, plans not going to plan, many days of hard work? By having your turf professionally installed, you’ll save a lot of time, and you will enjoy the greens sooner.

In order to properly install artificial golf greens, you need to level the ground, add a base of crushed aggregate, add padding, place the turf, add infill, and roll the turf for the best playability and to make it look like real grass. Trimming edges for clean borders can also be tricky and requires a lot of experience to get it just right. All of this requires some very specific tools and knowledge to install correctly and avoid messy sections and/or edges that end up peeling up creating unpleasant aesthetics.

Difficult Soil/Landscape

An ideal soil is rare. Many property owners can attest to this. It’s rare to be able to get your shovel into the dirt without issues. Instead, we have to work with stones, clay, or soil permeated with root systems from plants and trees nearby in many locations. Just digging can be tiring work. Plus, if you’re cutting into roots, you could be damaging surrounding trees you might want to keep.

We have encountered obstacles like large boulders, old (and new) irrigation lines, and tree stumps on many of our installation projects. All of these items must be repurposed or removed. Excavation itself also produces tons of soil you do not need — where would you go with it? Frequently we have to ship this excess soil offsite.

A pro artificial turf installer can address all of this . So if you don’t want to do very difficult manual labor or you do not know what to do with your excavated soil, hiring an installer for your project is your best choice.

Large Areas

When installing a golf green in a large area, seaming is one of the most difficult elements of the turf to get right. This is the method of joining two or more pieces together. This is like carpet installation, when turf seams are done right, they’re not noticeable. Seams that aren’t done correctly will be noticeable and provide a terrible looking finished product.

Picture this: rolling a sheet of paper or a poster. Have you always gotten the alignment just right when trying to pull-off a good roll? Rather than a clean edge, you sometimes end up with paper sticking out on one side. This same thing is possible when seaming artificial turf. One tiny error early on will mess up the whole project and look terrible when finished. A professional installer will have plenty of experience installing seams and they will make certain everything looks great before they are done.

THE SOUTHWEST GREENS WAY

There are three distinct things that differentiate Southwest Greens of New Mexico from the rest in the turf industry — craftsmanship, guarantees, and customer service. We do not believe in generic artificial turf installations, and because of this, we have perfected the art and the science of Albuquerque artificial turf installation. We’ve honed our process with over 6,000 golf greens across the globe under our belts.

Here is a quick look at how our artificial putting green installation process works.

  • A base made of crushed aggregate, which can be moistened and molded to make challenging breaks and undulations, unlike concrete.
  • Next, we install a cushion pad, at a minimum, that helps the ball roll and shot absorption, then we bring in our state-of-the-art polypropylene turf material that’s used to replicate the vibrant green color, softness, and playability of natural grass.
  • Then we in-fill the turf with a formulation of fine-coated silica sand which gives it the touch and feel of traditional grass.
  • Finally, the tops are rolled to give the effect of natural bent grass green. Options include installing first and second cuts fringe, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and sand traps.
